in the child sex abuse case against jerry sandusky. >> reporter: penn state officials arrived at court this morning in harrisburg, facing personal charges connected to the jerry sandusky child sex abuse case. they are accused of lying to the grand jury, telling them assistant football coach mike mcqueary did not tell them that he witnessed sandusky having sex with an underage boy in the shower in the locker room. he told prosecutors he first heard noises coming from the shower. he said he looked in the mirror and saw sandusky behind the boy. he then went on to tell the court, quote, i believe jerry was sexually molesting him and having sexual intercourse with him. mcqueary's testimony is also being contradicted by another grand jury witness, a family friend who says on the night of the alleged abuse, mcquary told him he only heard noises. the now assistant football coach now tells prosecutors he was shocked and distraught at what he saw and left the locker room and called his father for advice. after going home to talk to his father, mcquary says his next call was to head coach joe pat

. they're conflicting accounts of whether he walked in on former coach jerry sandusky sexually abusing a young boy and what he told people afterward. that's pivotal in today's hearing for two former school officials. they are accused of perjury and failing to report the suspected molestation. susan candiotti is on the story for us in harrisburg, pennsylvania. what are we expecting today? >> well, it should be a very interesting and possibly a very dramatic and frankly exciting day because we might be getting more details from mike mcqueary, who you just talked about. he is in the courthouse, so are the two co-defendants in this case, tim curley and gary schultz, the two penn state officials. mike mcqueary's testimony is very critical for the state making its case. and the state has said this morning, they announced that they will hear testimony from five live witnesses and also from three people whose testimony to the grand jury will be read into the record. and this could last probably half a day. now, what's important about mike mcqueary's testimony is that he's expected to take the
suspected child abuse in the jerry sandusky case. susan candiotti live in harrisburg, pennsylvania this morning. so what can we expect in court today, susan? >> reporter: well, it's going to be a very important day for the state, because the state is expected to put on mike mcqueary as a key witness to try to prove these charges of perjury and failure to report a case of alleged child abuse against these two penn state officials. it's a very important part of this case, because the state is going to issue more or less a mini preview of what's to come. they have to prove to a judge there is enough evidence that a crime was committed through the testimony of mike mcqueary and some others. >> so, susan, how are they going to prove that? >> reporter: well, of course, his testimony will be very important, and we're going it hear from him, if he indeed takes the stand, for the first time some details other than a broad overview of what he told the grand jury. we are expected to hear what mike mcqueary said that he saw back in 2002 in a locker room at penn state when he testified that he

. for the first time, mike mcqueary spoke publicly about allegations he witnessed jerry sandusky having sex with a boy in a locker in 2002 in graphic detail and under oath. he said he heard noises coming from the shower and then saw sandusky behind a boy with his hands behind his waist. he wasn't 100% certain, he believed sandusky was molesting the boy. his testimony is key. prosecutors say tim curley and jerry schultz lied about what mcqueary told them. >> most 6 or 7-year-olds know what it is to tell the truth or lie. >> the only question is what he described to curley and schultz. did he describe a sexual act? >> reporter: they maintain they were not told about the sexual details. >> had he heard from mike mcqueary that this boy in the shower was being, in any way, sexually assaulted or serious sexual conduct, he would have remembered that. >> mcqueary is facing criticism he didn't do enough to stop it. he was shocked and distraught and turned to his father for advice. he did not go to police. instead, he met with joe paterno and testified he conveyed to him what he saw. in a written sta
